For the SKOLKOVO ONE project, we created an English garden. We drew inspiration from three renowned English landscape designers: Nigel Dunnett, Dan Pearson, and John Brooks. All of them have received honors from Queen Elizabeth. They uphold the English tradition while creating highly modern work that sets trends not only in Europe but across the globe.
Inspired by the approach of these three gurus, we created a garden that embodies the principles of English landscape design. The English garden concept centers on the use of recognizable, characteristic plants within a setting that appears as natural as possible. Key elements of the English style invariably include groves, naturalistic plantings, lawns, and expanses of water. The English incorporate the surrounding landscape into the garden itself, making the garden feel like a seamless extension of nature.
This brings us to the idea of shaping a "green identity" for the site. However, we decided not to simply select the plant species native to our area, but rather to take a more creative approach to plant selection.
We drew inspiration from Mikhail Matyushin’s theory regarding the patterns of change in color combinations. In Matyushin’s theory, "color triads" are harmonious combinations of three colors, analogous to musical chords. These combinations are based on the principles of color variation within the color wheel, as well as color contrasts and relationships. Applying these triads, we selected colors that harmonize with the building facades: dark green and shades of purple. The result is a planting scheme that blends ecological principles with an artistic touch.

The selection of trees and shrubs is dominated by species with naturally green foliage, such as small-leaved linden, Tatarian and Amur maples, European rowan, silver birch, and crack willow. Dark-green conifers include Scots and lodgepole pines, European larch, and fir. Shrubs with purple foliage and Niedzwetzky’s apple trees serve as color accents. Shades of purple predominate among the flowering perennials — catmint, sage, liatris, geranium, and globe thistle — interspersed with knotweed, burnet, and echinacea. A wide range of ornamental grasses is also featured, including feather reed grass, tufted hairgrass, moor grass, and sedge.
